Event title Village Players Presents Thornton Wilder's "Our Town"
Where: Village Players Theater - Wolfeboro
Category: Special
Event description:
For those not familiar with Our Town, it is a 1938 dramatic play about everyday life over a few years’ time in a rural mill-town in New Hampshire, set from 1901 to about 1910. The themes revolve around the connections of the unique to the universal, the shifting nature of “time” in our lives, and paradox of how important, and yet how impossible it is to be attentive to everything that is happening in and around us as it happens. The plot of Acts I and II follows two families, the Webbs and the Gibbses, as their children grow, the boy and girl falling in love and getting married. The third act is strange in that it is the “death” act, in which almost all the dialog is among characters who have died, the lead female, Emily Webb Gibbs among them, having died in childbirth. But it is through this thoughtful and imaginative exchange that Wilder prods us into deeper thought and seeks to awaken us to how amazing life really is within all three “times:” within the current moment, in the dreams of the future, and in the remembered past.
